Developmental editing helps the writer evaluate their overall use of the basic tools of writing, such as plot, character, theme, setting, tone, and point of view. During this phase, the editor will help the writer determine whether the plot is organized clearly, if the characters are all necessary and well-developed, what still needs to be written, and what might be extraneous to the story.
